Aluminum-Free Steelmaking: Desulfurization and Nonmetallic Inclusion Evolution of Si-Killed Steel in Contact with CaO-SiO2-CaF2-MgO Slag

In some applications, deep desulfurization and deoxidation of steels without the use aluminum are required, using Si as a deoxidant instead, with double-saturated slags in CaO-SiO2-CaF2-MgO system. This work studied nonmetallic inclusion evolution for system an induction furnace compared results FactSage kinetic simulations. Steel samples were taken from steel melt analyzed ICP-MS combustion analysis chemistry, SEM/EDS quantity, size, composition. The indicate that was deeply desulfurized, final sulfur partition coefficient 580; MgO reduced slag, yielding dissolved [Mg] transformed liquid Mn–silicate inclusions into forsterite MgO. Intentional reoxidation oxidized electrolytic iron demonstrated significant concentration steel, by formation additional upon reoxidation.
